<td bgcolor="" valign="top" width="499">This time I'm not going to do the icon as I made it; rather, I'm going to work from the bottom layer to the top and tell you what went into each layer. I can't actually remember what order I did it in, sorry. Lol.

Layer 1: Is our image. It's Hugh Dancy with his costar from David Copperfield, I believe. It's greyscale, and I've done some sharpening filters on it. There are 48547620945 tutorials on preparing a base around, so I won't go into great detail. This method works better with a greyscale image, though, so if you have a colour one, desaturate it.br>

Layer 2: Take your marquee tool and set it to Square. Make a square selection. Then invert the selection (in PSP7: Selections > Invert) and flood fill the new selection with black. Invert the selection again, take a brush of about 10px, colour #EAD796, and create a few squiggles. Try to avoid Hugh's and his Lady-friend's faces. Then, increase the brush size to over 100px, and drop the density to 20 or less. Click once on the image to create the little dots. Don't overdo them. Make sure you've still got your square selection on, as we don't want the yellow overlapping the black.

Layer 2 contd.: Use a motion blur (In PSP7: Effects > Blur > Motion Blur) with angle of 329 or thereabouts, and strength of 24. Make sure your selection is still selected. You don't want the black border to blur! Set this mofo to Soft Light, opacity 100%.

Layer 3: Flood fill this layer with #D1CFBB. Set blending to Difference. It'll look pretty insane for a while, but bear with me.

Layer 4: Flood fill this layer with #EAD796 (the same colour you used earlier for the squiggles). Set it to Exclusion.

Layer 5: Duplicate your image layer and drag it up to this slot. Set it to Soft Light.

Layer 6: Create a saturation adjustment layer (in PSP7: Layers > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation/Lightness). Drag the Saturation slider down to -100, and leave the other two alone. Set the layer blending to Color, 45% opacity.

Layer 7: Grab this gradient by yours truly, whack it on a layer, and set it to Overlay, opacity 100%.

Layer 8: Then stick this gradient on another new layer, and set it to Hard Light, opacity 100%.

Now you have a beautifully prepared icon with the romantic feel of a vintage photo.

I did add some text as you see, which, sure, involved some tricks of its own. But permit a girl to keep some of her secrets. :>

Just thought I'd show this to you, it's layers one, two, and five, plus some text. It has a pretty damn cool feel itself, no?

Other icons I made using the same or a similar layer set:
</td>

Icon post coming soon; am just getting them all organised and making a few more. :>

I have a question about Layer 5...what do you mean by that?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]ellipsisicons
2005-03-21 10:56 pm UTC (link)
Well (i'm not sure how much detail you need), you click on layer one, and duplicate it. In PSP7, this means right-clicking on the layer in the layer palette and selecting duplicate or duplicate image or something like that.

Then you click and hold on the duplicate layer, and drag it up so that it's above layer four (if you, like, click and hold then move your mouse upward to where you want the layer to be, it'll move it).

Then you go to the blending options, which is to the far right on the layer palette, click the dropdown menu (it says 'normal' by default) and select 'soft light'

And voila.

Sorry if that was too detailed. You didn't give me much guidance in your question so I figured I should cover all bases.

Hope that helped. ~.~

I was a bit vague. Sorry, I was slightly frusterated and posted the question as a last try. Thank you, the answer was very detailed, but I'm syill stmuped. I understand everything up to your second paragraph (in the above answer). I don't understand how you 'drag the layer up'. Do you mean the icon itself? Or the label in 'Layers' located to the right? Or even the label in 'History'? I've tried to 'drag' all those things up, but I'm obviously doing something wrong. I just hope it's not soemthing completely obvious. I use PSP9, if it helps. Thanks for answering my question...could you answer this one?

Unfortunately, I'm not at all familiar with the later versions of PSP. I can only show you what's going on in PSP7. It doubt they'd change the method though.

^So this is your layer palette. Ignore the funny numbering of my layers; as i said in the tutorial, I did this in a different order to what was shown in the tute.

^Okay, now I've duplicated the image layer. It's called 'Copy of Background' and it's what is going to be layer 5.

^Now, I've left-clicked on the layer name and held the mouse button down. See how there's a thick black line between 'Copy of Background' and the layer above it? That's because I moved the mouse pointer (which didn;t show up in the Print Screen. It should be in line with the thick black line.) upwards while still holding the left mouse button down. This is what is meant by dragging the layer. If you keep moving your mouse pointer upwards, the thick black line will go upwards as well, jumping to between each layer. When you release the button, your layer will be put where the thick black line is.

^See, now I've released the mouse button and the layer has been moved upwards.

Oh, Wow, I did it. Well, halfway, Thank you so much :p I didn't know that your courses weren't for beginners, so that's why I was so messed up. So now I know how to make layers... Thank you, you were very detailed again, and I couldn't have done it without the pictures. But I have 2 Tests tomorrow and it's really late and I haven't studied, so I don't have time to tinker with this anymore, so could I ask... How do you transfer a gradient to a layer? I believe your suppose to import it, but when I save the gradient my computer doesn't see it to import it.(Sorry for pestering you)

:> Feel free to continue pestering. I'm on Easter Break, so I actually have assignments nothing better to do. ;)

*blink* So you didn't know the deal with layers? *ponders* That may be why dragging layers was causing problems. *lightbulb ;)*

Ok, so to get saved gradients onto icons in PSP7 (again, I don't know what PSP9 is like, so I'll assume it's similar), what I do is this:

Get your icon all ready, and create a new layer for the gradient. Then, open the gradient (as a new image). So you have your two files open: the icon, and the gradient.

Make sure you're on the icon file not the gradient file. You should have a colour palette that looks something like this. Click on the arrow beside the foreground colour (circled in red) and hold the mouse button down for a while. A menu like in the image to the left should pop up.

Select the third option from the left. This is the option for flood filling a pattern onto your icon layer. Once you've done that, the foreground colour box (previously white) should become a pattern (in my PSP7 it's a bluish ribbon pattern). Click on this foreground box and it'll bring up a pattern window.

Like this. Now, click on the downwards-pointing arrow next to the pattern and it'll bring up a pattern selection thing. Your gradient (if you still have it open) should be one of the patterns in this lot. Make sure you're scorolled right to the top of it, though, because your gradient will probably be the first pattern on the list.

Click on it, then hit OK to close the pattern box. Get your flood fill/paint bucket tool, and click inside the area of the icon (making sure you're on the right layer). It should flood fill the gradient.

That's about as much help as I can give you. if it doesn't work, you should probably go looking for tutorials that use PSP9, because I have no doubt there'll be a whole ton out there. ;)

Good luck!

(Reply to this) (Parent)

Oh, Well

2005-03-24 07:18 pm UTC (link)
Unfortunately, it seems PSP9 doesn't quite work that way. Either that or I'm just unlucky (I'm going with the latter). It doesn't matter, I can get by using only the gradients I have now - though I really did want to finish this tutorial. Thatnks for your help - and hey, I have all Spring Break to tinker with it now!

This is a really cool effect and tutorial. I saw the second step and went "WTF?!", but I read on and saw how it panned out. My PS7 is misbehaving when I select and try and fill things lately, and is determined to feather when I tell it not to, which I need to fix. And I don't know of a way to change the density of a brush in PS7, so I did lots of dots manually with the pencil to test this out. Once I find out these things, I'll definitely be using this tutorial on actual icons. It rocks, and is now in my memories.

I love your tutorials and the way you write them, and your rants :D

Lol. Yeah. That was actually probably a pretty late step in the actual icon making. I write the tutorials from the bottom layer up, so sometimes they seem a bit random.

Sucks when graphics prograns play up, innit. My PSP9 is playing silly buggers with me too, and it's frustrating!
